My site idea will involve a lot of dynamic tweens, so I’m looking for a good tutorial to learn how to use the Tween function. This page seems like a good start.

Responding to The Future of Web Content and Does HTML5 Really Beat Flash?

I don’t think HTML5 has the power to kill Flash. But I also don’t think Flash will be around forever.

As a designer, it’s important to recognize and appreciate the fact that things are constantly changing. The platform with which we design is largely irrelevant. We have to always learn and even embrace new technology as it’s released. It’s very easy to get into a rut of familiarity, but we need to be comfortable trying new things, in both design itself and in the tools we use to produce it.

Now, it’s up to us to decide if the new technology is superior to the older ones. HTML5 is more streamlined, but I believe if the canvas elements are really going to replace Flash, they’re going to require software similar to Flash to create with the same depth. As far as replacing Flash for things like streaming video, I can see that becoming a very real possibility. It depends on browser support, though, like Jeremy Allaire pointed out. The idea that Google will develop a video codec for the purpose is reassuring, because I trust Google to put out a quality product that isn’t entirely monetarily driven.

While I don’t think Flash is of monumental importance to design, and it would be fine for it to die out, I sincerely hope that it does not just because of Apple’s lack of support for it. As the Does HTML5 Really Beat Flash? article pointed out, Apple’s lack of support for Flash is most likely based less on development problems around Flash, and more about Apple’s self-interest in selling more apps. I would be delighted if this did end up hurting sales of the iPhone or the iPad, but I doubt that it will. The iPad is overhyped: it’s nothing but a cool gadget. That’s fine for its own sake, but if it ended up hurting the development of something that actually IS innovative, like e-ink digital readers, that would be a shame.

Project #3 Update and Sitemap

I’ve decided to change the focus of the project 3 Flash site. My original intention was to create a context for a paper written for Art Theory. My new focus is to create a site for the fictional exercise hoop company that I designed a campaign for in Typography 3, called Hoop-La. This site will act as a fictional e-commerce site with a functioning shopping cart.

The sitemap for the site can be found here. I will begin iterating designs for the site itself shortly and will post sketches on this blog.

Project #3 Proposal

For project #3, a flash interface site, I will be using a term paper that I wrote for a course last year. The focus of the paper is on new media and art, using reiterations of Garfield as examples. Since this paper was originally just that, a paper, I will have to design and create graphics for this project, but I don’t foresee that being a problem. I haven’t fully considered how to handle the content, but I will start making sketches this week.
